Every decade is defined by a few key hairstyles.

Men’s hair in the 1990s was all about matte ends and grungy, messy styles. Meanwhile, buzz cuts and shaggy styles became more popular in the early 2000s. Regardless of the year, trendy hair looks were often determined by the celebrities of the time.

Who can forget David Beckham’s breathtaking shaved head from 2000? After years of blonde, tousled locks, his new hairstyle sparked a buzzcut frenzy among young football fans in Britain. Likewise, Justin Bieber’s trendsetting swoop hairstyle from 2009 was a major factor in ‘Bieber Fever,’ and fans were devastated when he chopped it off. a few years later.

In addition to iconic hair moments, celebrities have developed signature hairstyles over the years. Lenny Kravitz has been known to wear long dreadlocks since the ’90s, while Keanu Reeves has sported shoulder-length locks for years.

Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce is a fashion risk taker who wears daring outfits and ever-changing hairstyles (and facial hair!). Early in his NFL career, Kelce favored a curly hairstyle with his signature beard. He experimented with different variations of this before settling on his current vibrant look, a faded haircut. Kelce has paired this hairstyle with every type of facial hair, from a mustache to a grown-out beard.

After a news source dubbed his signature hairstyle “The Travis Kelce” in early 2024, the football player set the record straight with the popular look. “Man, I got a good fade, if you need it. It’s a two on top, a nice high to mid fade with a taper in the back,” he said in an interview with ESPN. “But I didn’t invent that, I just asked for it.”

David Beckham

Beckham is a football legend and one of those rare people who can wear almost any hairstyle – and he’s tried many. During the early days of his football career, Beckham sported a classic ’90s hairstyle: long, accentuated locks that fell slightly into his face. In 2000, the former footballer shocked fans when he debuted with a shaved head.

“I had a hairdresser at the time named Tyler. I said to him, ‘I’m going to cut my hair,’ and he said, ‘Are you sure? Do you really want to do that?” Beckham said of the trendsetting version of an episode of his 2023 Netflix docuseries Beckham. “I never did it to attract attention. I’m not that person.”

Although he has sported a buzzcut a few times since then, Beckham has also embraced a variety of other hairstyles. From long blonde locks and an early 2000s mohawk to his signature soft, spiky style, he’s clearly a fan of constantly changing up his look.

Lenny Kravitz

Kravitz is the ultimate rock star, with the hair to match. Throughout the ’90s, the “American Woman” singer was known to wear long dreadlocks. In the early 2000s, Kravitz cut his hair into a short afro, which was featured on his 2001 album cover. Lenny. Kravitz has experimented with several other hairstyles over the years, including cornrows and a shaved head, but has recently returned to his signature dreadlocks.

During an interview with GQ in May 2018, Kravitz said that while it was “liberating” to cut his locs in the 2000s, he chooses hairstyles based on what feels good to him.

“It was very liberating at the time. And I kept them out of the way for years. And now I have them again,” he said. “It just happened, and it felt like the right thing to let it grow. And it feels very right at the moment. But at the time, it was a journey to be able to let that go and move on, without what people identify you with. And it’s good to do that: challenge your own image and the way people identify you.”

Harry Styles

Making the leap from boy band member to solo artist was more than just a change in music for Harry Styles. While the singer was known for his side-swept curls and later shoulder-length locks during his One Direction days, he opted for a completely new style at the start of his solo career.

In 2017, Styles showed off much shorter locks styled in a coiffed ‘do, which he had teased in an Instagram post the year before. Although he has since developed a signature medium-length wavy hairstyle, Styles changed this again in 2023 by opting for a buzzcut that shocked his fans.

“The fans are so passionate about his hair! At first it made me nervous. But now I get a lot of nice messages and it makes me so happy,” Ayae Yamamoto, Styles’ hairstylist, told PEOPLE in July 2023. so happy, like: okay, I’m doing something here. They’re such big fans and they know his hair so well, so I want to do well for them because now I’m such a big Harry fan too.”

Brad Pitt

From a mullet to long blonde locks, there aren’t many hairstyles Brad Pitt hasn’t tried. One of Pitt’s most popular styles was his 2004 buzzcut, a style he adapted for his role in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Another iconic hair moment came a few years earlier when Pitt and then-girlfriend Gwenyth Paltrow wore matching hairstyles to the 1997 premiere Property of the devil. In 2021, the actress revealed that while their blonde pixie haircuts weren’t planned, they did work with the same hairstylist, Chris McMillan.

In recent years, Pitt has largely kept short hairstyles. He is often seen with a long, coiffed hairstyle, but is also a fan of a tousled, spiky look reminiscent of his cuts from the late ’90s.

Keanu Reeves

Reeves has a healthy head of black hair that he wore in a limp, medium-length hairstyle in the late ’80s and early ’90s. In 1994, the actor debuted with a buzzcut for his role in Speed. Reeves’ new ‘ reportedly shocked studio executives, who considered delaying filming so his hair could grow back.

For most of the early 2000s, the Matrix actor kept his hair short and messy before he started growing it. Reeves is now known for his signature shoulder-length locks with a center parting that he rarely strays from.

The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) is known for his hits like “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face,” but early in his career, the singer was just as synonymous with his favorite hairstyle. He wore dreadlocks tied to create a structured ‘do, making him instantly recognizable. Speak with W magazine in May 2023, The Weeknd shared that recognizability was one of the reasons he decided to cut his hair at the end of 2016.

“The hair became an obstacle for me!” he said to the outlet. “I went from ‘Nobody knows who I am’ to ‘Nobody has that hair but The Weeknd.’ I always tried to hide it. When I finally decided to cut it, everyone said, ‘Don’t do it!’ That gave me more reasons to do it. I was so identified with that hair that I had to cut it. I didn’t want to be known just for this or that.”

After cutting his hair, The Weeknd has sported a new hairstyle for each of his album eras. With that of 2016 star boy, he had a pompadour style, while an afro and a handlebar mustache characterized his After hours era in 2020.

Jason Momoa

It’s hard to believe that there was a time when Jason Momoa didn’t have his signature shoulder-length curly locks, but he has sported a few other styles throughout his career. After starting as a model in 2000, Momoa opted for a short haircut. The Aquarius The actor then experimented with shaggy curls and dreadlocks before settling on his signature look.

In 2022, Momoa shaved off his hair while visiting Hawaii. In an Instagram video he shared about his haircut, the Hawaii native toasted a “new beginning” and revealed he was cutting his locks to raise awareness about the use of single plastics.

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson has been praised for his ‘chameleon’ acting style, which has inspired many hair changes. During his Twilight For days, the actor was known for his messy, gravity-defying locks. In 2014, Pattinson debuted a shaved head for his role in The Robber and later sported a blonde, floppy hairstyle while filming the 2020 sci-fi movie Basic principle.

When it comes to iconic hairstyles, the Bieber swoop might take the cake. The singer released his debut single “One Time” in 2009, which, combined with his long, view-blocking locks, was a recipe for superstardom. After the success of his first album My worldBieber cut his hair before embarking on a new era of music.

“We’ve been talking about it for the last six months,” his then-hairstylist Vanessa Price told PEOPLE in 2011. “Cutting your hair is just part of the evolution and growth process for everyone, and I think he was just ready for it.”

Since then, Bieber hasn’t been afraid to experiment with his hair, with everything from short, updos to platinum blonde locks. However, the singer has limited himself to two hairstyles lately: a buzz cut and messy, medium-length locks.
