Lockheed Martin excited by US Congress’s approval of F-16 sales

Lockheed Martin, the renowned defense company, has expressed its enthusiasm following the successful conclusion of the US congressional process to approve the sale of F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Turkey.

OJ Sanchez, vice president and general manager of Lockheed’s integrated battle group, highlighted the excitement over the cooperation opportunity with Turkish counterparts on the Block 70 series fighter jets.

The recent approval by the US Department of State for the $23 billion sale of F-16 aircraft and modernization kits to Türkiye has paved the way for enhanced cooperation between the two countries.

Türkiye’s request for 40 new F-16 Block 70 aircraft and 79 modernization kits to upgrade the existing fleet highlights the growing partnership between Lockheed Martin and Türkiye.

Sanchez’s comments come as Lockheed Martin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the F-16’s first flight. Considered the most advanced fourth-generation fighter aircraft ever produced, the Block 70 series offers improved capabilities compared to previous versions.

Sanchez highlighted the F-16’s versatility and adaptability, making it the preferred air combat option among NATO and European countries. The aircraft’s affordability in terms of flight and maintenance costs continues to increase its popularity in the global defense market.

The F-16 Block 70 represents a significant advancement in fourth-generation combat technology, with features typically associated with fifth-generation capabilities. Equipped with the Northrop Grumman SABR APG-83 radar and conformal fuel tanks, these jets offer extended range and extended flight life, ensuring their relevance to future air forces.

Lockheed Martin’s Greenville plant, which now produces F-16s, is targeting a production capacity of four aircraft per month, further underscoring its commitment to meeting global demand for advanced fighter jets.
