A Middleboro man turns his hobby into Danny’s Dozens gourmet cookie business

MIDDLEBORO – Deep into the perils of COVID-19, a local man discovered his passion for baking essentially by accident, leading him to launch Danny’s Dozens.

One evening, Daniel Gavigan searched his kitchen for a late-night snack, and to his surprise, he found one, but not exactly.

The 28-year-old found a pack of chocolate chips with a recipe on the back.

Gavigan read the instructions carefully and thought it would be “easy.”

A late night snack became a business venture

“Baking cookies is kind of an art, it seems easier than it actually is,” says Gavigan.

While baking the cookies from ingredients he scraped together at home, Gavigan discovered a newfound love for baking. He kept trying new recipes until he was satisfied.

“It took me about six to eight months to create a chocolate chip recipe that I was happy with. “I was never the best cook, but I always loved sweets and always had a huge sweet tooth,” Gavigan said.

What makes Danny’s Dozens of cookies so special?

Now you may be wondering what makes Danny’s Dozens unique from other artisan bakers in the area?

Well, the answer for Gavigan is simple: it’s the ingredients and the ‘love’ that goes into each batch.

“My cookies are baked with organic ingredients, small batches that I make myself, and they are virtually my creations. I wasted a lot of eggs, and it was trial and error,” Gavigan said.

Danny’s Tens got its big break thanks to social media and word of mouth.

Some of Gavigan’s most popular cookies include chocolate chip cookies, “My Name Is Earl” (infused with Earl Gray tea) and “Browned Buttered Bourbon Pecan.”

The baker uses raw chocolate bars and cuts them into thick pieces that ooze out of the chocolate when you take your first bite.

What also sets the recipes apart is the imported vanilla bean paste and sea salt flake finish that puts the flavors “over the edge.”

Gavigan loves the aromas of the fresh Earl Gray tea he uses to steep his cookie batches.

Baking became therapy

Baking is a ‘huge distraction’ and a popular hobby for the young entrepreneur.

When Gavigan enters the kitchen, all his problems melt away. It’s just him and his ingredients to create perfect harmony.

Since the end of COVID-19, Gavigan has been able to sell his cookies at craft fairs, school fundraisers and local pop-up events in the area.

So far, Gavigan has been baking part-time, but he hopes to launch his business full-time and take over the baking industry with his unique flavors.
