Russia accuses the US of trying to destabilize India during the general elections

What’s the story

The Russian Foreign Ministry has claimed that US accusations that India is violating religious freedom rights are aimed at destabilizing the country during the general elections.

The accusations by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova follow a report by a US-based organization that criticized India for alleged violations of religious freedom.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) report also suggested that the US State Department would designate India as a ‘country of special concern’.

Accusations of disrespect for India as a country: Zakharova

“Regular, baseless accusations by the US against New Delhi… are nothing but a reflection of the US’s misunderstanding of the national mentality, the historical context of the development of the country of India, and the lack of respect for India as a country and as a country.” a state,” she said.

“The reason for this is the intention to destabilize the domestic political situation in India in order to complicate the general elections taking place in the country,” Zakharova stressed.

USCIRF report details

The USCIRF report accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of reinforcing “discriminatory” nationalist policies.

Furthermore, it noted that anti-conversion and cow slaughter laws, as well as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act continued to be enforced.

According to the report, enforcement of these rules has resulted in the arbitrary detention, monitoring and targeting of religious minorities and those who advocate for them.

India refutes allegations of religious freedom violations

India’s Foreign Ministry has strongly denied these allegations, accusing the US-based organization of attempting to interfere in India’s electoral process and spreading false information.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal branded the organization as biased with a political agenda and claimed that their attempts to “disrupt the world’s largest democratic exercise” would not be successful.

The ministry has also rejected claims regarding the involvement of an Indian official in a foiled assassination attempt on Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

The US accused India of trying to kill a Sikh separatist

Weeks after Canada accused the Indian government of being involved in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year, the US also accused an Indian government official of plotting to kill Pannun.

According to U.S. prosecutors, Gupta was taking orders from an alleged Indian government official. They said Gupta allegedly told an undercover law enforcement agent disguised as a hit man that Nijjar was one of his targets.

“We have so many targets,” Gupta reportedly said.
