Did you know you can go to Starbucks and get soil for your garden?

Besides your usual venti caramel macchiato, you can also go to Starbucks and pick up coffee grounds for your garden, especially since Vegetable Garden Day is coming up on May 19th.

When you go to Starbucks, you probably think about coffee, pastries and a good atmosphere, but rarely about your house plants. But since 1995, Starbucks has actually been helping homegrown gardeners grow their plants. It’s actually quite simple: Starbucks provides bags of used coffee grounds that can be used as compost. Those unfamiliar with this use for coffee grounds may be surprised, but anyone with a green thumb swears by this technique. Now you can just go to a Starbucks store and get coffee grounds for your plants… and maybe a drink and a cake too, because why not?

“Our vision is to recycle and reduce waste in our stores as much as possible. This is one way we can achieve this goal while providing something for our customers,” said Jim Hanna, Starbucks Director of Global Responsibility in 2015. For nearly 30 years, the Ground for Your Garden Initiative has provided used coffee grounds for a new use, apart from being incorporated into the signature tables we all see in Starbucks stores.

It was in April 2022 when the initiative made its way to Thailand. To commemorate Earth Day, Starbucks stores here in Thailand have also started offering used coffee grounds for customers to put into their plants. The coffee grounds, which lose much of their acidity during brewing, turn into a greenish material that promotes plant growth due to its high nitrogen content and also helps the soil retain water.
