Canada Work Visa or Study Permit: How and Where to Calculate IRCC Processing Times – Investing Abroad News

After submitting their application for a work visa or study permit in Canada, immigrants worry about how long it will take for their application to be processed. Processing times indicate how long it takes to process an application under normal circumstances.

Processing time starts the day Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) receives an application and ends when they make a decision. If you apply by mail, the time starts when your application reaches the IRCC mailroom. If you apply online or in person, the process begins when you submit the application.

To strengthen Canada’s immigration system, IRCC is improving its online processing times tool to help new immigrants estimate how long it would take to process a complete application.

When using the IRCC timeframe tool, forward-looking processing timelines are suggested that help know how long foreigners who apply today will have to wait before receiving a final decision on their application (or taking the oath of citizenship, for applicants citizenship award).

The estimates will be updated regularly and will provide immigrants with realistic and up-to-date information, allowing them to make vacation and living plans based on a specific time frame.

Forward-looking processing times are now available for the following applications:

Canadian Experience Class (Express Access)
Provincial Nominees Program (Express Entry and Non-Express Entry)
Federal Skilled Workers (Express Entry)
Skilled workers from Quebec
Citizenship grants
Citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship)
Spouse or common-law partner residing in Canada
Spouse, common-law or marital partner residing outside Canada
Parents or grandparents

For the other categories of applications, IRCC will continue to use retrospective historical processing times. Backward processing times are estimated based on the time it took IRCC to process 80% of permanent residency applications in the previous six months, as well as 8 or 16 weeks for temporary residency programs.

FE Online found that as of May 7, 2024, the processing time for a temporary residence application to visit, study or work for a study permit (from outside Canada) is 14 weeks (last updated: April 30, 2024, updated weekly).

The processing time for a work permit (from outside Canada) was also 21 weeks. If someone is not applying for work in an essential occupation, the processing time may be longer than shown.

Processing time indicates how long it has historically taken us to process most complete requests. The time it takes to send an application between a visa application center and our office and the time it takes for you to provide your biometric data are not included.

If you have already submitted an application and are waiting for your application to complete, the updated forward-looking times may reflect estimates that are shorter than the time you actually waited. The tool indicates how much time a person submitting a new application today can expect to wait, starting at the end of the queue. This is because a variety of factors influence our expected processing timelines at some point in the year.

If you have already registered, you will be closer to the front of the queue. Applications will continue to be processed in the order IRCC receives them, and in most cases you will not wait longer than the new forward-looking processing time for a final decision. Do not log in again as this will put your request at the end of the queue and take longer to process.
