Canada | Temporary policy for international students ends

Canadian officials have announced new rules for international students working off campus.

Most important points:

  • As BAL previously reported, on January 1, officials announced an increase in cost-of-living financial requirements for study permit applications.
  • As part of that effort, the government has also waived the 20-hour per week limit on the number of hours international students can work off campus, extending the policy until April 30.
  • Officials have now announced that the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus will not be extended further.

Extra information: The Canadian government has announced its intention to change the number of hours students are allowed to work off campus per week to 24 hours this fall. Officials cited student needs and an appropriate balance between work and study in implementing the change.

BAL analysis: These important changes coincide with additional reforms recently implemented by the Canadian government to increase cost-of-living financial requirements for study permit applications and establish an entry cap on international student permit applications for a period of two years. Employers should be aware of these policy updates and consider them in their employment strategies and recruitment efforts.
