Australian father arrested on drug charges in Bali

A father has been arrested in Bali after police reportedly raided a luxury villa and found methamphetamine on the tourist.

On the famous island of Gili T near Lombok, near Bali, cows graze on a garbage dump as groups try to clean up the area.

Troy Smith, a father from Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula, was arrested with his wife Tracy in Canggu, a seaside resort about 10km north of Kuta, the island’s main tourist centre.

While his wife was subsequently released without charge, Mr Smith remains behind bars following the raid on the luxury villa, 7News reported.

He previously worked as a fisherman in South Australia and for the Lower Eyre Peninsula Council.

Indonesian media have reported a raid by the Indonesian National Police’s anti-narcotics brigade on a villa in Canggu suspected of being a drug factory.

Ecstasy pills and marijuana were allegedly produced in the house.

Jansen Panjaitan, a spokesman for Bali’s regional police, told Indonesian news agency Antara that evidence found at the villa was being tested, including possible tools used in narcotics.

He also said three “foreigners” were arrested during this week’s raid, along with drug evidence.

“We have an active investigation, including the evidence.

“To be sure, we are waiting for the results from our laboratory. Those in custody continue to be interrogated,” Mr Panjaitan added.

It is not clear whether this raid involved Mr Smith and his wife.

The pair were taken to the police station in the city of Denpasar for questioning.

A lawyer for Mr Smith told 7News that his client was suffering from drug addiction and that a rehabilitation center rather than prison would be preferred.

Anti-drug laws in Indonesia can carry prison sentences of four to twelve years. Human trafficking charges can lead to the death penalty.
