Recalled candy sold in Nebraska poses major health risk and deadly infection

Palmer Candy Company of Sioux City, Iowa on Sunday (May 5) recalled their “White Coated Confectionary Items” due to possible Salmonella contamination. The US Food and Drug Administration defines Salmonella as “an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Serious conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, can also occur as a result of an infection.

Recalled products include Caramel Swirl Pretzels 4oz, Favorite Day Bakery White Fudge Mini Cookies, Peanut Butter Snack Mix, Yogurt Pretzels and more. The complete list, along with expiration dates, can be found at fda.gov.

The recalled items were recalled nationwide and distributed to Walmart, HyVee, Target and Dollar General stores nationwide. The contaminated ingredient in question likely came from one of Palmer Candy Company’s suppliers. As of Monday, May 6, no illnesses or adverse side effects have been reported.

Officials have urged consumers to return all recalled white-coated confectionery products for a full refund and warned against consuming them. Individuals with questions may contact the company at “1-800-831-0828, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”
