From luxurious salads to not-so-poisonous apples, the Met Gala 2024 food menu showed us what fantasy tastes like

It’s finally that time of year when our social media feeds are flooded with photos of celebrities posing in the most fashionable clothes for fashion’s biggest night: the Met Gala. It’s not just the carefully crafted fabrics of the celebrities that follow a certain theme, but also the food on the menu. For example, because last year’s Gala was dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld, his favorite drink Diet Coke was served to all guests.

Similarly, to complement the theme ‘The Garden of Time’, this year’s bouquet and buffet were decorated with floral and fairytale themes. Caterer Olivier Cheng left no stone unturned to design a menu that looks like it came straight out of a children’s storybook. “Inspired by the lush gardens and palaces of the fantasy world of Sleeping Beauty, we really wanted to build our own bite-sized fairytale,” Cheng told Vogue Magazine.

The first dish to be plated was a spring vegetable salad with elderflower foam, raspberry vinaigrette and earthy olive crumble, complete with butterfly-shaped croutons. The caterer expresses the idea behind this dish beautifully, he says he chose the early spring vegetables that grow after a long winter as a metaphor for the awakening of Princess Aurora after her deep sleep. This dish is a perfect addition to this year’s exhibition “Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Reawakening.”

The main course was a tenderloin topped with a tortellini rose for the guests to enjoy. It symbolized a culinary castle floating on a pine needle and a ‘moat’ of mushrooms.

The dessert served was an ode to the infamous apple from the story ‘Snow White’. The not-so-poisonous apple was actually an almond cremeux, molded into the shape of a miniature apple, covered in a bright red mirror glaze and finished by placing it on a walnut-flavored ‘leaf’.

The forbidden theme also included forbidden foods: onion, garlic and chives. In an interview, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour revealed that she isn’t very fond of these three ingredients. The reason is simple: they don’t want their guests to get bad breath or chives between their teeth.

The attention to detail of the decor was as precise as the food menu. The tables were decorated with burgundy roses with English ivy, candlesticks and salad plates.

We must admit that the dishes not only complement the aesthetics of the event, but the thought behind them is just as appealing. We would certainly love to take a seat in this room that seems straight out of a fantasy land, next to our favorite celebrities, dressed in our very best.
