What if Asteroid 2024 JZ Hits the Earth?

While the chances of 2024 JZ impacting Earth are extremely small, it’s natural to wonder what could happen in such a hypothetical scenario. If asteroids of this size were to collide with our planet, they would likely disintegrate in the atmosphere, creating a powerful explosion and shock wave. The impact zone would experience significant damage, but the effects would be localized and unlikely to cause widespread destruction.

However, there is a small subset of asteroids that are known as potentially hazardous asteroids and should be closely monitored. These are the big ones – over 460 feet (or 140 meters) in size – with orbits that bring them within 7.5 million kilometers of Earth’s orbit around the sun.

To keep an eye on these wandering space rocks, NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) is on the case. They continuously monitor all known objects near Earth and assess the potential impact risks they may pose. This data was collected from observatories around the world, including contributions from amateur astronomers, as well as from NASA-funded observatories such as Pan-STARRS and the Catalina Sky Survey.

So while 2024 JZ may give us a heavenly run, there’s no need to panic. Thanks to NASA’s vigilant monitoring and advanced technology, we can rest assured that our planet is in no immediate danger.
