Exeter’s Enna Chocolate wins Good Food Award for chocolate bar

EXETER – Enna Chocolate’s Hacienda Victoria Ecuador 76% dark chocolate bar was crowned winner at the 2024 Good Food Awards.

Enna Grazier received the award at a ceremony in Portland, Oregon on April 29. The annual awards recognize food companies that are committed to “sustainable, delicious and responsibly produced food and drinks.”

“It was an absolute pleasure and honor to share the festivities with my family, and it made the victory that much more special,” said Grazier.

The bean-to-bar chocolate is made at Grazier’s Exeter store, Enna Chocolate, at 152 Front Street, with cocoa she buys directly from producer Hacienda Victoria in Cerecita, Guayas, near Ecuador’s Pacific coast. The farm’s mission is to responsibly conserve the Nacional Arriba cocoa bean and have an ethical and positive biodiverse impact on cocoa farming.

“It is an honor to work with these beautiful cocoa beans and share their flavor with the world,” said Grazier.

The same “workhorse” beans, she added, are also used in many other products in her store, such as cookies and hot chocolate.

Grazier’s chocolate bar was selected from a highly competitive field of entries from across the United States. The winners were selected through a rigorous blind tasting and sustainability study.

“The Good Food Awards considers all chocolate entries together: they do not have subcategories for dark chocolate or for chocolate with creative additional ingredients such as fruit or nuts,” Grazier said. “So to be recognized among so many people for a simple dark chocolate and other types of chocolate bars is extra special.”

The recent recognition comes after Grazier won two awards at the 2023 Americas Bean-to-Bar and Craft Chocolatier Competition.

Grazier has been making chocolate from bean to bar for almost ten years. Her hobby turned into a profession after chef Evan Mallett tasted one of her samples and asked if he could sell them in his restaurant.

She started making the bars in her kitchen, then a commercial space in Epping, until moving to her current space and cafe on Front Street.
