Met Gala: J-Lo’s beautiful Schiaparelli dress is inspired by butterflies

Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to a dramatic red carpet moment and the 2024 Met Gala saw the star dazzle in an intricate butterfly-themed gown that took more than 800 hours to create.

The actor and singer wore a striking, custom haute couture dress by Schiaparelli, created by American designer Daniel Roseberry, on the red carpet of the Met Gala.

As co-chair of the event, it’s no surprise that J-Lo met the Met Gala’s dress code, which was based on The garden of time, a short story by British writer JG Ballard. Together with the Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Reawakening theme, this year’s organizers encouraged guests to reflect on fleeting beauty and all things ephemeral – an idea perfectly summed up by the butterfly motif.

“The inspiration for this look was a butterfly that transformed into something beautiful,” said celebrity hairstylist Lorenzo Martin Fashion. “Just like a butterfly, we wanted the hair to be angelic, fresh and beautiful.”

Jen kept her hair and makeup classic and neutral to let her statement dress shine, with glowing skin, nude lips and a slightly loose, textured bun around the hairline.

To say J-Lo’s dress is complicated is an understatement. More than 2.5 million silver foil bugle beads were needed to craft the designer dress, which equates to 800 hours of hand embroidery, according to reporting from Glamour.

Jen’s makeup artist Scott Barnes further explained how J-Lo’s glam team embraced the butterfly theme, writing in an Instagram post featuring a collection of the star’s videos: “The butterfly is a perfect articulation of a sleeping beauty. Something that goes to sleep and wakes up beautiful and still lives in a garden without being a flower.

“The butterfly and (the) idea of metamorphosis have been part of Schiaparelli’s DNA since the beginning. Much more than flowers, the butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis. Transformation. Something that was asleep and that wakes up beautiful, powerful and new.”
