Celebrities and influencers held liable for misleading advertisements: SC

SC warned that celebrities, influencers and advertisers are equally responsible for endorsing and distributing misleading advertisements.

The Supreme Court warned that celebrities, social media influencers and advertisers will share equal responsibility and liability if they endorse and distribute deceptive and misleading advertisements or services related to food and health products.

The Supreme Court said: “It is the shared responsibility of advertisers and endorsers, including celebrities and influencers, to ensure the accuracy of advertisements.”

“Endorsements by public figures, influencers, celebrities, etc. contribute to the promotion of a product, and it is imperative that they act with responsibility while endorsing a product in the course of advertisements,” noted a bench of judges Hima up. Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah.
