Shiok Singaporean restaurant opens a location in New West

With five years and two restaurants, Vancouver’s Shiok restaurant is adding a third location to its roster, this time in New Westminster.

Located at 624 12th St, Shiok will join the mixed commercial and residential neighborhood bustling with popular local eateries.

The restaurant’s name, Shiok, is a Singaporean word to express satisfaction.

“That’s what we hope people will say after they eat our food,” owner Susan Teo told The Burnaby NOW in 2022. “It’s so shiok – so good, so delicious.”

Shiok launched in 2019 on Kingsway in Vancouver with a mission to bring classic Singaporean dishes to local diners.

The menu offers approachable Singaporean dishes such as Hainanese chicken rice, curries and Laksa, a fiery soup made with curry noodles (your choice of white or yellow). To complete your meal, try shrimp-seasoned chicken wings or a classic satay with homemade peanut sauce.

The success of the original Shiok has led to growth for the local company in recent years.

“After surviving the pandemic, we opened our second location in Lougheed city food court in 2022 to even further spread the authentic Singaporean flavors we grew up with,” a restaurant representative explained via email.

The Lougheed Mall location is an “express” operation, with a limited menu.

The New West restaurant, Shiok Canteen, “will be a casual eatery with the same tried-and-true favorites on our menu as our first location on Kingsway,” the company explains.

Renovations are underway at the future Shiok Canteen, which was previously a flooring company. Shiok has teased its third restaurant location on Instagram.
