They are considered to be one of the most laborious animals on this planet and assist humans in carrying their goods from one place to another. Historically, donkeys have also played crucial roles in warfare. Considering their importance in human lives, May 8 is annually observed as World Donkey Day. Started in 2018 and officially established in 2019, the day highlights the importance of animals in human lives and focuses on raising awareness about them. Habitat of Donkey

Domesticated individuals of donkeys are found across the globe. The animal has a long varied history and the roots of its presence can be traced to both Asia and Africa. However, it is believed that the actual wild donkeys can be found mainly in the Arabian peninsula and in northern Africa. These animals mostly prefer to live in warm and dry climatic conditions.

What does donkey eat?

The donkeys mainly prefer eating green grass and straw throughout the year, while during winter and other cold months, they rely on hay or haylage to meet their nutritional requirements. Grass hay is considered a great feed, as it is low in protein and healthy for donkey’s teeth.

How do they behave?

Donkeys are highly social animals, eagerly associating with both conspecifics and other livestock animals, including cows, horses, llamas and sheep. Considered to be one of the most laborious animals, the donkey remains highly active during the morning and evening while preferring rest during the middle of the day.

Their height ranges between 90 centimeters and 150 centimeters. While some breeds of donkeys have fur on their bodies, others have smooth, clean skin.
