Kano tries to prevent flooding and cleans the sewers

The Kano State Government has made arrangements to clean the various drains and drainage systems across the state as part of measures to prevent possible flooding especially in the metropolis.

Arewa PUNCH The conclusion is that in addition to the capital and metropolis, the state is also targeting other major cities in the state against the upcoming rainy season.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo, disclosed this in an interview with Arewa PUNCH in Kano on Monday.

The commissioner who spoke through the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Samaila Gwammaja, said the measure was necessary to prevent loss of life and property and to reduce the extent of damage.

According to Gwammaja: “As you know, Kano is one of the 31 states identified by the Federal Government as affected by flooding during this year’s rainy season.

“So based on that forecast, even though it may not be true, we decided to take some measures to prevent possible flooding in the state,” he said.

He said that during the cleanup work, all blocked drains would be evacuated to ensure free flow of sewage, in addition to removing all temporary structures mounted on top of drains in and around the city.

“I can therefore assure the people of the state that the Kano State government is taking all necessary steps and measures to prevent flooding which has been a recurring phenomenon in the past,” Gwammaja added.

He also disclosed that the government had also launched a public awareness campaign against indiscriminate dumping of waste and other unwanted materials into waterways, drains and on streets.

“This is part of the renewed measures being taken to curb the negative impact of such ugly attitude on the environment and to address the various environmental challenges faced by the state.

“The increasing level of pollution due to dumping of unwanted materials into drains and drains is posing a serious hazard to the health of residents, especially in the capital,” the commissioner noted.

He announced that the state government had purchased additional trucks to ensure proper waste disposal at collection centers in the capital.

According to the commissioner, the monthly environmental sanitation exercise observed by the state government is part of an effort to ensure that the capital is clean and tidy.

“We will continue to enforce monthly environmental sanitation as one of the measures taken by the government to curb indiscriminate dumping of waste and keep the state clean,” he said.

Gwammaja revealed that the state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, had recently launched a tree planting campaign of three million trees as part of the state government’s desertification project in the 44 local government areas of the state.

Therefore, the commissioner warned the people to desist from indiscriminate felling of trees without seeking permission from the relevant authority.

“I would like to take this opportunity to warn people against indiscriminately cutting down trees without obtaining permission from the relevant agencies or authorities,” Sule Garo said.
