Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry emphasizes the integrity of carbon trading

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar underlined the importance of integrity in international carbon trading.

In the ministry’s statement received by ANTARA Minister Bakar explained on Tuesday that in terms of maintaining integrity in global carbon trading, state sovereignty and avoiding greenwashing, Indonesia has issued a regulation on carbon trading.

The Minister explained that one of the important factors in international carbon trading is the integrity of the environment, which must be maintained by monitoring the value of carbon traded.

Indicators of environmental integrity include transparency, accuracy, consistency, completeness and comparability, she pointed out.

“In fact, the original purpose of regulating the economic value of carbon in Indonesia’s carbon reduction efforts is to fulfill Indonesia’s commitment to the global community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Bakar said.

The minister emphasized that the original intention to regulate the economic value of carbon should not be compromised.

Bakar said Indonesia is reducing greenhouse gas emissions by setting Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

“And of course there is an incentive that can be given to all stakeholders organizing the reduction of CO2 emissions,” she noted.

The minister also drew attention to misinformation on Indonesia’s carbon economic value issue during a business forum in Singapore.

Minister Bakar explained that the government is preparing its policy on the basis of the 1945 Constitution and existing laws and regulations, as well as on the basis of the treaties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“A further consequence of this disinformation is the threat to state sovereignty in forest carbon offsets and land management agreements that will disrupt state jurisdiction,” she noted.

The minister also warned of the potential for abuse of the concession agreement given to operators such as corporate entities and companies.
