Stamp Out Hunger is back in Rochester, Minnesota this Saturday!

Your help is needed on Saturday, May 11, and this is one of the easiest things you can do to show kindness to others who need it most right now.

Ending Hunger Back in Rochester, Minnesota on Saturday, May 11

Outside of all our houses and apartments, there is one thing we all have: a mailbox. This Saturday, May 11, you can still add your letters and put up the red flag so our postal workers know to pick them up, but there is one other item you can add to your box.

From cereal boxes to peanut butter jars, the groceries you give to your USPS mail carrier this Saturday, May 11, will make their way back to the Salvation Army’s downtown food shelf. If you have any questions about what to donate to the food shelf, please leave a comment or message our team. Thank you!

When did hunger begin to die out?

Stamp Out Hunger began in October 1991 as a way to help food banks and pantries in ten cities and was such a success that it was rolled out nationwide by the United States Postal Service. After consulting with nonprofit partners on the best strategy, it would be best to move the annual food collection date to the spring.

More than 1 billion pounds of food was collected during Hunger Eradication Day

Back in 1993, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive was revamped and launched to take place annually on the second Saturday in May. More than 11 million pounds of food was collected to help food banks and food shelves across the country. Since that date thirty years ago, approximately 1.9 billion pounds of food have been collected.
