Another right-wing ‘conspiracy theory’ that is about to become reality

Although delayed, another right-wing “conspiracy theory” is about to become a reality.

When Congress debated then-President Barack Obama’s expansion of socialized health care through the Affordable Care Act in 2010, critics claimed the program would accept illegal immigrants.

The Liberals rejected that. Typical of the defense of such claims was a February 2012 Seattle Times editorial that stated: “Contrary to much of the propaganda hurled at the Affordable Care Act, the law that guarantees coverage for all Americans excludes illegal immigrants .”

As PBS reported in February 2013: “During the 2010 debate over federal health care reform, Democrats promised that illegal immigrants would not be among the 27 million people who would receive coverage. President Barack Obama reiterated that promise last month when he laid out his immigration plan.”

Yet Obama’s understudy is about to make it happen.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services is poised to issue a regulation that would allow more than 100,000 illegal immigrants to receive health care coverage through Obamacare, according to a report from ABC News.

Some of the illegals targeted for reporting are those known as “Dreamers,” or illegals who came to America as minors and are allowed to remain under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Other classes of immigrants, such as asylum seekers and those with temporary protected status, can already get insurance through the ACA’s marketplaces, which are part of Obama’s 2010 health care law, also known as “Obamacare.”

Biden’s rule change would take effect on November 1, 2024, just before the presidential election.

“I am proud of Dreamers’ contributions to our country and want to provide Dreamers with the support they need to succeed,” Biden said in a statement Friday.

Under Obamacare, recipients receive coverage through a health insurance exchange set up by their state or by the federal government if the state does not have such a program.

Recipients pay a small portion of the cost of the policy and receive government subsidies to cover the rest.

The Trump administration resisted providing illegal health care coverage under Obamacare and was rebuffed in efforts to repeal DACA in 2020.

“President Biden and I will continue to do everything in our power to protect DACA, but it is only a temporary solution,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement. “Congress must take action to ensure Dreamers receive the permanent protections they deserve.”

On Friday, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt criticized the decision to allow DACA recipients access to health care markets. She said the Republican presidential candidate would “close the border, stop the invasion and expand economic opportunity for American citizens, not illegal aliens.”
