Met Gala 2024: What the Irish stars wore on the red carpet this year

Irish stars were in attendance as the biggest celebrities in film, music and fashion descended on New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Met Gala on Monday evening.

Barry Keoghan, Andrew Scott and Eve Hewson were among the stars who walked the red carpet in New York for Vogue’s annual fashion extravaganza, which raises money for the museum’s Costume Institute.

The theme of this year’s gala was ‘The Garden of Time’, based on a short story by JG Ballard that explores humanity’s relationship to creation and destruction.

On the evening, the A-list guest list arrived dressed in many floral and botanical motifs, as well as creative interpretations of decline and fall.

The Irish were well represented at the iconic event, with a number of stars from these shores walking the red carpet in striking looks.

Barry Keoghan

Saltburn star Barry Keoghan wore a sharp three-piece Burberry suit for Monday night’s event as he made his red carpet debut with his pop star girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter.

Taking inspiration from the character of Count Axel in JG Ballard’s short story The Garden of Time, Keoghan and his stylist Ilaria Urbinati opted for a Mad Hatter-esque outfit in which the Dublin native wore three Omega watches, including a pocket watch from the 1970s ’30.

The Banshees of Inisherin star’s Burberry suit consisted of an olive velvet tailored jacket, a black wool pinstripe waistcoat, a silk poplin shirt with ruffles and tailored trousers.

Keoghan completed the look with a black wool top hat and black leather Oxford boots.

Eve Hewson

Irish actress Eve Hewson lit up the red carpet in a beautiful dress by Irish designer Simone Rocha.

The Bad Sisters star, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono and activist Alison Hewson, wore a beautiful pale pink chiffon dress inspired by preserved garments such as Queen Victoria’s mourning dress, which Rocha uncovered while creating her autumn/winter 2024 collection.

The dress was embroidered with silver beads, had a corset bodice, puff sleeves and a modest train, and Hewson completed her look with long chiffon gloves, also decorated with silver beads.

Jamie Dornan

Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan made his Met Gala red carpet debut and made sure he flew the Irish flag at the event in a suit designed by Derry fashion designer Jonathan Anderson.

Dornan, who walked the red carpet solo, wore a classic three-piece morning suit made from structured material.

The 50 Shades of Gray star added a pop of color with a baby blue cardigan and red tie, completing the look with wide-leg pinstripe trousers and a gold brooch.

Vogue, the hosts of the Met Gala, called Dornan’s look “grandpa core.”

Alison Oliver

Cork native Alison Oliver also made her Met Gala debut on Monday as she walked the red carpet in a sparkling black suit.

The 26-year-old wore bejeweled high boots to complement her long oversized blazer, paired with a chic cape adorned with intricate materials from a variety of different fabrics.

Oliver made sure he represented Ireland at Monday’s event when she teamed up with Irish beauty brand Sculpted by Aimee for her make-up that evening.

Oliver is one of Ireland’s fastest rising stars, after earning her breakout role in the 2022 adaptation of Irish author Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel Conversations with Friends.

The Dublin-based series chronicles the unexpected connection between aspiring writer Frances (Oliver) and her mentor’s husband (Joe Alwyn) (Jemima Kirke), with Frances’ boyfriend Bobbi (Sasha Lane) also getting caught up in the love quadrangle.

Oliver recently played the frail, tortured heiress Venetia Catton of Saltburn, alongside fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan.

Andrew Scott

Dubliner Andrew Scott ditched the classic suit on Monday and instead opted for a Versace semi-sheer black mesh top for his Met Gala look.

Scott showed off his impressive arms in a sleeveless black cardigan with a waistcoat, completing the look with matching trousers and heeled Chelsea boots.

The All of Us Strangers were joined on the Met Gala red carpet by designer Donatella Versace and actor Jude Law. Law famously played Dickie Greenleaf in the original 1999 film version of The Talented Mr Ripley, starring opposite Matt Damon, while Scott played Tom Ripley in the recent Netflix remake.

Samantha Barry

Cork-born Samantha ‘Sam’ Barry, editor-in-chief of Glamor magazine, was among those who entered the Metropolitan Museum on Monday for the most glamorous evening of the year.

Barry, who grew up in Ballincollig, wore a beautiful dress from The Atelier, which featured a fitted corset bodice adorned with silver detailing, ending in a peplum hem over her skirt.

The skirt consisted of layers of tulle and was accented with floral appliqués, while Barry completed her look with Jimmy Choo shoes, a Judith Leiber clutch and beautiful Margot McKinney earrings. She completed her look with a floral headpiece, while her hair was styled by Balmain’s Eduardo Ponce, and her makeup was by Charlotte Tilbury.

Taking to her Instagram account, the Cork woman thanked the team of stylists who helped her put together the look for her grand entrance.

Jonathan Anderson

Irish designer Jonathan Anderson was among the esteemed seats of honor at Monday night’s Met Gala, with a number of stars wearing outfits designed by the Derry native.

Anderson, the son of former Irish rugby captain Willie Anderson, was named honorary chair by Vogue editor Anna Wintour herself, who wore custom Loewe that evening.

The Irishman’s Loewe brand consists of Jamie Dornan, Irish actress Alison Oliver, actors Jonathan Bailey, Ayo Ededbiri and Mike Faist, singer Omar Apollo, director Luca Guadagnino, actors Greta Lee, Dan Levy, Ambika Mod, Josh O’Connor, Taylor Russell and editor Lauren Santo Domingo for the event.

Anderson himself wore a classic black suit on the red carpet, which he combined with bright green shoes and a gold shamrock pin on his shoulder, as a nod to his home country.
