May 9 rioters should be punished according to the laws of the land: DG ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the spokesperson of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Tuesday stated that those responsible for the May 9 riots should be punished under the country’s constitution and laws to maintain confidence in the country’s legal system. .

“The issue of May 9 riots is not limited to the Pakistan Army but (in fact) to the ConcertPak Army

ns the entire nation,” he said at a press conference in Rawalpindi.

When asked about the possibility of dialogue with any group, Major General Chaudhry stated: “There will be no talks with any political leader or with any group that attacks its own army and indulges in propaganda (against them)”.

“There can be no dialogue with an anarchist group,” he added, suggesting that “the only way forward for the anarchists (group) is to sincerely apologize (for their actions), leave behind the politics of hate and indulge in constructive politics (instead)”.

“The talks are for political parties, not for institutions,” the army spokesman clarified.

On the topic of terrorism, the army spokesperson stressed that there is “irrefutable evidence” that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is using Afghanistan to carry out attacks on Pakistan.

“There is irrefutable evidence that Afghan territory is being used by the TTP (…). Recent terrorist incidents can be traced back to Afghanistan,” he said at the press conference in Rawalpindi.

Major General Chaudhry reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to counter-terrorism efforts and stated that the country will make every effort to dismantle the terrorist network.

He underlined that security forces are ready to take any necessary action against terrorists. However, he pointed out that the primary focus of the Pakistan Army is to maintain law and order in the country.

“The army chief has said there is no place for terrorists in Pakistan,” the general reassured, adding that steps are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Regarding the issue of Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan, the army spokesperson said: “Millions of Afghans are still living in Pakistan as the country fights against terrorism. Pakistan has helped Afghan refugees, which the world has recognized.”

He emphasized that millions of Afghan nationals still live in Pakistan, and announced that more than 563,000 Afghans have been repatriated.

The DG ISPR acknowledged that the presence of Afghan civilians contributes to the deteriorating law and order situation.

“Militants are ruining the situation in Balochistan, but the army is acting as a wall against the miscreants,” he noted.
