Minister of Culture advocates art development for mental well-being

The Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has called for greater recognition and support for arts initiatives in healthcare.

In a virtual presentation to launch the National Arts in Health Week 2024, held in Lagos on Monday, Mrs. Musawa highlighted the transformative power of the arts in promoting physical, emotional and mental well-being.

She said: “The National Arts in Health Week Nigeria 2024 is a testament to our unwavering commitment to promoting community well-being through the transformative power of the arts. Through painting, drawing, sculpting and other artistic modalities, individuals are provided with a safe and supportive space to explore their thoughts, emotions and experiences.

“Art therapy allows individuals to externalize internal struggles, gain insight into their inner world, and cultivate resilience in the face of adversity. Art serves as a powerful medium for communication and expression, especially for those who have difficulty verbally expressing their thoughts and emotions.

“For individuals struggling with mental health issues, trauma or chronic illness, art provides a nonverbal outlet for self-expression, allowing them to communicate complex feelings and experiences that might otherwise go unexpressed.”

The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to championing the transformative power of art in the fields of health, well-being and therapy.

She urged Nigerians to work with the ministry to harness the limitless potential of the arts to inspire hope, ignite creativity and cultivate a better, more compassionate future for all.

Also speaking, the Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Hajiya Kaltume Bulama-Gana, congratulated the organizers of the program on the successful opening and recognized the valuable partnership of the ministry.

Ms. Gana emphasized the importance of the arts in promoting health, well-being and unity, highlighting its transformative power in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being.

She said: “Music, dance, drama and visual arts harness the transformative power of creativity in promoting physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. NTN’s performances have not only captivated our senses, but have also underlined the profound impact that art can have on our health. From reducing stress and anxiety to improving cognitive function and promoting social connection, art is a powerful tool for holistic healing and resilience.”

Throughout the week, participants will take part in a wide range of workshops, seminars, exhibitions and performances that highlight the benefits of the arts for health and wellbeing.

The National Arts in Health Week Nigeria 2024 is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, the Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship, the Ministry of Health and the WHO-Jameel Arts and Health Lab.
