Addressing a press conference, senior leader of PTI Sheikh Waqas Akram along with PTI’s Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar said that the then Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) regime government a loss of Rs 300 billion to the national kitty due to unnecessary imports of wheat.

He said the Shehbaz Sharif-led PMD regime had moved the digest for wheat imports and farmers were now forced to bear the burden due to unnecessary wheat imports by the then PDM and caretaker governments.

He said the caretakers could not be acquitted as it was an extension of the then PDM regime, adding that the “incompetent and anti-farmer” PML-N government is causing the “economic massacre” of farmers because they fails to adopt proper policies. strategy regarding wheat purchasing.

“The wheat crisis will have a very bad impact on both farmers and masses in the long run, and only middlemen will benefit from the government’s mismanagement,” he added.

Waqas demanded that the government should take immediate steps to facilitate the farmers and pay them the due price for their crops, instead of resorting to blaming each other to save the skin of real perpetrators.

He warned that the day is not far when farmers will take to the streets against this injustice, which will make matters worse for the Shehbaz Sharif-led regime as it is busy keeping things under the carpet.

Bhachar said the farmers would start their massive protest demonstration on May 12 and PTI would join them as the party would not leave them alone.

He said that 77 million tonnes of wheat is marketable in Punjab while the government announced to buy only two million tonnes, showing that they want to sell their crop at a throwaway price.

He demanded a thorough probe into the wheat scandal, besides removing the food of the then secretary, and charging the then interim Prime Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi along with ex-interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar for tarnishing the country due to their small vested interests.

Sahibzada Mehboob, another PTI leader, praised the Taliban government in Afghanistan for prioritizing the agriculture sector after restoring normalcy in the country. Their initiative to begin work on the 285-kilometer Qosh Tepa Canal in early 2022 was solely aimed at boosting the agricultural sector. , which would be completed in 2025.

He said PTI would not allow the government to push six million farmers against the wall and demanded an open inquiry to impose exemplary punishment on those involved.
