Man shot dead by police in supermarket parking lot

Abilene police shot and killed a man who was allegedly wielding a gun at United Supermarket on North Willis Street on Monday afternoon, according to a statement from Abilene police.

This is APD’s second fatal shooting in less than 10 days.

Around 2 p.m., police were called to the store where employees reported a man threatening employees and customers with a bladed weapon and demanding money from the register, according to allegations in a statement from APD Public Information Officer Rick Tomlin.

The man eventually left the store, allowing employees to lock the doors for safety and prevent the man from re-entering.

Officers arrived and found the man still holding the gun outside the store, according to charges.

After he failed to comply with multiple commands from officers to surrender his weapon, an officer deployed a Taser, but it had no effect on him. Officers shot the man in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead by a justice of the peace.

The two officers involved are on paid administrative leave per department policy, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.

A name for the man shot and killed has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

On April 30, Angela Jaques, 44, reportedly opened fire on police during a standoff. The police returned fire and killed her. An officer was placed on administrative leave and the Texas Rangers are investigating.
