It is with sadness and some joy (for Dad) that we announce the passing of John Byron Williams in his 96th year on Thursday May 2, 2024. Born September 8, 1928 in Kent Bridge, actually on the second floor of the General Store. John lived a full life and lived with two wives Margaret Williams (nee Hill) and Madelaine Symonton (nee McTavish). He is survived by his son Wyatt (Carol) Williams and two grandchildren Emily (Kevin) Williams and Wendel Williams. John maintained an ongoing relationship with his second wife’s daughters, Shelley (Kevin) Barnett and Shanno (Alex) Symonton. Dad and Daisy (his dog and best friend) always looked forward to their visits and car rides around the province.
John didn’t enjoy the older years (“Golden years, my ass,” he would say) and missed all the wild and crazy times of his youth and middle age. He missed working (and he worked until the early 1970s) in various factories and facilities as a millwright. As much as Dad loved the work and the money, I think Dad really enjoyed the horseplay and well-intentioned bickering that would ensue, and the workplace nicknames I liked were “tangle foot” because he was always on the edge seemed to be standing. a fall.
All things considered, John really had a good long life, two good wives and a good friend Louise Hind (died July 2022). Two late sisters Jean (Albert) Stephens and Mary (Lee) Stephens who took quite good care of their little brother in his time of need. He also had a well-behaved child (me) and a loving daughter-in-law and a dog who loved him, who, by the way, is alive and well with my daughter, where she has been since Dad moved to Riverview Gardens. I would like to thank the staff at Riverview for caring for John, he can be a bit unruly at times! Also a special thanks to Dad’s neighbor, Bob, for helping Dad with snow removal and lawn care. Growing older and losing many of your loved ones, freedoms and independence is a tough pill to swallow, and to quote the late Jimmy Buffet, “Growing old is not for the faint of heart.” Rest in peace daddy.
The cremation has taken place and Dad’s remains will be interned next to his wife at Bethel Cemetery. No appointments are planned, because as John said: “all my friends are dead”
