Amit Shah has shot video: Delhi Police makes first arrest, accused carries out pro-Congress X-handle

Delhi Police on Friday made the first arrest in the Amit Shah deepfake video case. The accused, Arun Reddy, runs a pro-Congress social media account.

According to police sources, Reddy handled the X account, ‘Spirit of Congress’.

The Delhi Police, which also falls under the MHA, has filed the FIR in the case under Indian Penal Code Sections 153 (causing provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, place of residence, language, etc.), 465 (forgery), 469 (forgery to damage the reputation of a party) and 171G (publication of false statements with the intention of distorting the outcome of an election influence) and under the Information Technology Act.

The FIR targets certain handles on social media platforms, which edited Shah’s statements to falsely imply that the minister was advocating ending reservations in the country.

The move came a day after BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya said the Telangana Congress wing circulated an edited video of Shah, “which is completely fake and has the potential to trigger large-scale violence.” In his post on

Police in Hyderabad on Friday said they have arrested five social media activists of Telangana Congress Party in connection with distorted video that went viral recently.

The suspects were produced before a local court, which granted them bail on the condition that each person has to furnish two sureties worth Rs 10,000 per person and appear before the investigating officer on Monday and Friday until further orders.

According to a police statement, on April 27, they received a complaint from a state BJP leader alleging that the Telangana Congress Pradesh Congress Party had posted on its X account a distorted or fabricated video of Amit Shah’s speech during his election campaign and public meeting at Siddipet recently, in violation of the IT Act.
