Forum “Health, well-being and regenerated water for Lerma”: a step towards environmental sustainability and public health in Mexico

The Forum “Health, Wellbeing and Regenerated Water for Lerma” recently took place, linking social projects to the Water and Environment Sector Plan in the State of Mexico. As the state faces water challenges, citizens, civil society organizations, universities and the state government are working together to address the needs of the people on environmental and water-related issues.

Minister of Water Pedro Moctezuma Barragán emphasized the importance of joint participation and dialogue between different agencies and citizens to ensure the sustainability of the Toluca Valley and Mexico’s water resources for future generations. The Development Plan of the State of Mexico 2023-2029 serves as a guideline for this cooperation.

For the first time, a sectoral plan is being developed to address concrete solutions to environmental and water challenges, led by the Water Secretariat together with counterparts from Environment, Health, Urban Development, Infrastructure and Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.

Citizen experts, farmers and government agencies discussed water scarcity, river pollution and overexploitation of aquifers in work tables. Conservation of natural resources and water sources in the state was highlighted as a critical need.

Health Minister Macarena Montoya Olvera emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between levels of government, organizations and civil society to propose public policies for the well-being of Mexicans. She highlighted the correlation between environmental conditions, water pollution and public health, emphasizing the need for a healthier living environment for all citizens.
