Midland-based Bickford is hosting its first-ever marathon event from April 15 to 19

Bickford of Midland Assisted Living hosted its first-ever marathon event, April 15-19, to coincide with the world-famous Boston Marathon on April 15. Residents, staff and families had a week of laughter, friendly competition and more than 300,000 steps together. walked.

The marathon took place within the Bickford community, with participants winding through indoor and outdoor trails.

Residents, staff and guests participated, demonstrating the strong sense of community and support within the facility. Everyone who wanted to participate received a pedometer.

Family members also joined in to walk alongside their loved ones, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie.

“We are thrilled with the success of our first-ever marathon event,” said Stephanie Yohn, director of health and wellness at Midland-based Bickford. “It was inspiring to see our residents, staff and families come together to promote our Higher Path to Senior Care. Many residents shared how much better they felt, slept and ate as the week progressed.”

Arn Hammond, one of the residents of Bickford in Midland, emerged as the best walker, reaching a total of 67,000 steps during the event. For comparison: a marathon (42.2 kilometers) is equivalent to between 52,000 and 55,000 steps.

Other residents, including those in wheelchairs, wheeled around the course, showing that everyone could contribute and be part of the fun. Many residents set personal goals for themselves, such as not needing their walker for the next round.

Complementing the experience was the assistance of community health care partners, who provided hydration and snack stations to keep everyone fueled and energized.

“The energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and we look forward to hosting more events like this in the future,” said Kristin Losey, Happiness Coordinator at Bickford of Midland. “The whole building came together and encouraged each other. There were so many moments that were inspiring to see.”
